My Gutter Fell Off the House. Now What?

It tends to happen the same way.

A heavy Michigan downpour overnight. A metallic screech, a thud, and then what sounds like a waterfall hitting the deck. In the morning you go outside with your coffee and find twenty feet of aluminum hanging off the roofline by one screw, swaying.

And the first thought is almost always the same: ladder, longer screws, done by lunch.

Save yourself the weekend. Here’s what actually happened, and why putting it back the way it was will fail.


Gutters Don’t Fail. The Wood Behind Them Does.

Aluminum doesn’t get tired. When an entire run rips off a house, the gutter is rarely the thing that failed.

The board your gutter hangs on is the fascia — the flat trim running along the roof edge, capping the ends of your rafters. Every hanger, spike, and screw holding that gutter goes into it.

Here’s how it dies:

Water gets behind the gutter. Usually because the drip edge is missing or was installed wrong, or because ice dams have been backing water up under the shingles at the eave — the most common cause in Southeast Michigan.

That water sits against the back of the fascia where nothing dries and nobody looks. Not once. Every rain, every thaw, for years.

The wood goes soft. Rot works from the back face forward, so the painted front can look completely fine while the material behind it has the structure of wet cardboard.

Then a real storm comes. A full gutter is heavy — water runs about eight pounds a gallon, and a long run carries a lot of it. The screws have nothing solid left to bite. Gravity does the rest.

The gutter falling is the last event in a chain that started years earlier. That’s why the timing feels random and never is.


Why Screwing It Back Up Doesn’t Work

You can absolutely get it back up there. That’s not the problem. The problem is what you’re screwing into.

Longer screws in rotted wood buy you a few weeks. The fascia has no fiber left to grip. It’ll hold in dry weather and let go the first time the gutter fills — and the second failure usually takes more with it, because the fastener holes have widened and the board has less material left.

Then there’s winter. A gutter packed with ice carries several times the load of the same gutter full of water. That’s the load the assembly has to survive in February, and it’s the one that pulls hangers out of good wood, let alone bad.

And rot doesn’t stay put. Fascia is fastened to your rafter tails. Once the fascia is gone, the moisture keeps moving — into the rafter ends, into the edge of the roof decking, and behind the soffit. What was a trim board becomes framing.

The practical test: push a screwdriver into the fascia behind where the gutter was. If it sinks in with light pressure, no fastener is going to hold there. That board has to come off.


Please Don’t Do This From a Ladder

Setting a ladder against a roof edge you already know is compromised is a bad plan.

The fascia is often what people steady a ladder against, and it’s the exact thing that just failed. Add wet ground, a soft spot in the lawn, and twenty feet of awkward aluminum you’re trying to hold overhead with one hand.

Falls from ladders send a lot of homeowners to the ER every year in this state, and gutter work is near the top of the list. A gutter is not worth a broken hip.


What This Is Actually Telling You

A fallen gutter isn’t a gutter problem. It’s your house reporting that water has been going somewhere it shouldn’t, long enough to destroy structural trim.

Which means the real question isn’t “how do I rehang this.” It’s why did water get behind the fascia in the first place.

Usually one of:

  • No drip edge, or drip edge installed wrong. This thin metal flashing directs water off the deck edge into the gutter instead of behind it. It’s code-required on new roofs and routinely missing on older ones — and it’s one of the first things a cheap re-roof skips.
  • Ice dams. Water backing up under the shingles at the eave, which is exactly where the fascia is. If you get big icicles every winter, this is almost certainly your answer, and it means you also have an attic ventilation problem.
  • Gutters pitched wrong or undersized, so water overflows the back edge rather than draining.
  • Chronic clogs holding standing water against the seam for months.

Fix the gutter without fixing the cause and you’ll be back here in a few years with a new rotted board.


What a Proper Repair Involves

In order, because the order matters:

  1. Find how much rot there is. Probe the full run, not just where it let go. Rot spreads sideways along the board and rarely stops at the failure point.
  2. Check the rafter tails and deck edge. If moisture reached the framing, that gets addressed before anything is closed up. This is the step that gets skipped and the one that costs the most later.
  3. Replace the fascia with sound material, properly primed and sealed on all faces — including the back, which is where the last one failed.
  4. Install or correct the drip edge, so water goes into the gutter instead of behind it. Without this you’ve rebuilt the same failure.
  5. Rehang with proper pitch — roughly a quarter inch of fall per ten feet — using hidden hangers into solid wood rather than spikes.
  6. Look at why water was overshooting, if it was. Sometimes that’s an ice dam problem in the attic, which is a different job and worth knowing about before winter.

That’s carpentry and roofing work, not a handyman with a drill. Someone who only hangs gutters will hang a new gutter on the same bad board.


Frequently Asked Questions

Can I just leave it off until spring? Not really. Gutters exist to move roof runoff away from the foundation. Without one, every rain dumps concentrated water at the base of the wall — which finds its way into basements, and in Michigan means freeze-thaw pressure against the foundation all winter. If it has to wait, at least get a downspout extension or splash block under the drip line.

Only one section fell. Is the rest fine? Sometimes, but check. The same conditions that rotted one section usually apply to the whole run, especially on the same roof plane. The section that fell is the one that lost first, not necessarily the only one that’s compromised.

How much does this cost? Depends almost entirely on how far the rot spread. A short section of fascia and rehanging one run is a modest repair. A full run with soffit damage and rafter-tail repair is a real project. Nobody can quote it honestly without probing the wood.

Should I switch to aluminum fascia or capping? Aluminum capping over wood looks clean and cuts painting maintenance — but it also hides the wood underneath. If the flashing behind it is wrong, it can trap moisture and you won’t see the rot until something falls off. Worth doing, but only over sound wood with correct drip edge behind it.

Are gutter guards worth it? For clog-prone lots with mature trees, decent ones help. They don’t prevent ice dams and they don’t fix pitch. They’re a maintenance convenience, not a structural solution.

What about the ice damming that caused this? That’s an attic insulation and ventilation issue, and it’s fixable. If you’re getting large icicles every winter, that’s the same water that rotted your fascia. Worth reading up on ice dams before you spend money on the gutter alone.
